How Miracles Happen
It is impossible to absorb this program at one meeting. We suggest you attend at least six meetings before you decide if you want what we have. Remember, the HOW of the program – Honesty, Open-mindedness, Willingness. No one at the meeting represents or speaks for all of OA. What an individual expresses is his own opinion and experiences. We feel the only authority is the “Big Book” of Alcoholics Anonymous, which in some miraculous way, has an answer to our living problems.
You may have felt uneasy at our meeting because you heard the word God mentioned. God as we understand him, is the power ourside ourselves. Perhaps the fellowship of Overeaters Anonymous will be your Higher Power in the beginning. It is not required that you believe – only that you become willing to believe. You cannot force yourself to believe, but you can stop doubting.
If the desire to stop eating compulsively is sincere, then Overeaters Anonymous can help you. On pages 83 and 84 of the “Big Book” the promises of this program are stated; “We are going to know a new freedom and a new happiness. We will not regret the past nor wish to shut the door on it. We will comprehend the word serenity and we will know peace. No matter how far down the scale we have gone, we will see how our experience can benefit others. That feeling of uselessness and self-pity will disappear. We will lose interest in selfish things and gain interest in our fellows, self seeking will slip away. Our whole attitude and outlook on life will change. Fear of people and economic insecurity will leave us. We will intuitively know how to handle situations which used to baffle us. We will suddenly realize that God is doing for us what we could not do for ourselves.”
The need to eat compulsively will leave you of you follow the 12-Steps of this program. That is why we suggest you find a sponsor as soon as possible and being reading the books and literature available through meetings of Overeaters Anonymous.
Even if you go back out and eat again, which some of us had to do, we doubt you will be able to enjoy your food as you had in the past. It is as if you instinctively know the answers are here. And if you do go back out “there”, remember, our doors and hearts are always open to you. We are not here to judge. Many of us had to find ou the hard way.
This program is not for those who need it – only for those who want it! We hope you want it. Please keep coming back!
